Australia Day’s date should be changed

January 26 is when Australia day is celebrated and also marks the first day the british fleet first landed on New South Wales shores raising the great britain flag. On the 50^th anniversary of Australia day it was declared a national public holiday. Australia day is meant to be a celebration for bringing cultures together but because of the date many people (specifically) natives/indigenous are affected by this day and don’t like to celebrate “invasion day”. For the first Australians, federation day is more of a dread and sorrow compared it ebing a happy day for others..

I believe Australia day should be changed immediately on a day that everyone approves on so all Australian citizens can celebrate it.

It was the beginning of the injustices the faced –

January 26^th marks the day aboriginals were invaded and several horrific tragedies happened to their people. The indigenous were devastated by watching their villages being massacred and the women as well as children being raped. Now they have to be reminded of all those events by the country celebrating it as a public holiday.

The events of what happened to the indigenous ancestors are still felt today with mental and physical damage to their people. Throughout generations aboriginals have gotten weaker and are now 1.2x more likely to have a heart attack than a white Australian male.  

In the novel “no sugar” the effects are still felt of the abuse the aboriginals faced throughout the novel. Indigenous were forced into assmulating with white culture and working within jobs comes with that. In the play Mary worked at a hospital were most indigenous women would leave because they would end up impregnated by Mr N.S Neal. Mary knew what happens and she ended up running away with Joe because she didn’t want anything/anyone to harm her child. When she was captured and sent back Neal Severely whipped her with no remorse even though she was pregnant. 

This shows the lack of sympathy the white Australians had for the indigenous people back then and how they were treated. This is one of the highlights on why Australia day should be changed. 

Written Explanation –

I chose to write a persuasive blog. My topic is Why Australia day should be changed. Some parts of the nlog are repetitive to show how serious the topic is and the trauma of what happened to the first Australians. The intended audience for the blog is fellow Australians who agree on the topic as well as government officials who can make a difference and have the power to change the date.
