Australia day, a day that most of the Australian population celebrate, the national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, that marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain, which should be a day that should be celebrated right?
But do we realise that this day is also the day that the indigenous people the were the ones who were invaded, abused, raped and treated with complete disrespect. Do you think it is fair that people celebrate the day that people took over innocent indigenous people, raped and abuse them?
They say Australia is now one big multicultural community but some people seem to forget that Indigenous people are apart of our community, so how can indigenous people celebrate this day that makes them feel unaccepted and unwanted.
I strongly believe that Australia day is something that MUST be changed, it is honestly so disrespectful and disgusting towards indigenous people.
The day of invasion
26th of January, the raising of the Flag Of great Britain after invading and torturing innocent indigenous people that lived in a land that wasn’t even yours in the first place.
I was recommended by one of my friends to read a act play “no sugar” by Jack Davis, it was one of the reasons that triggered me to write this blog, i recommend that everyone reads it, reading this play made feel so angry but also made become more open minded towards Australia day. In this play there is a part in it where the white people in it force the indigenous people to sing a song on the day of Australia after Invading them.
And it’s so funny because it amuses me that people in this day generation are still able to celebrate a day like this, to be honest if you are one of the people who celebrate this day you really should feel disgusted and maybe think of the indigenous people and how they feel.

The fact that my whole topic is talking about “invasion day” therefore even proves my point even more as to why the date of Australia Day needs to change
Disrespect towards Indigenous people
In Australia we claim to be one big community where we all united and acceptive with all races, but yet Australians stills seem to celebrate a day that is so rude and disrespectful towards indigenous people. As Australians how are we united with indigenous people, if we celebrate day when they got invaded, abused and raped? How do you expect indigenous to celebrate this day when the day is so traumatising and disgusting towards them?
I work at at a place in the city and on this day all i see is a bunch of happy families, it upsets me because these kids are celebrating such a horrifying day, and they don’t even know it. In the play no sugar, it shows how much the indigenous people were so disrespected and treated.
This just even proves my point even more towards how this day has so much disrespect discourtesy towards indigenous people.
Put yourself in their shoes
How would you feel knowing that people are celebrating with their friends and families a day where your people got abused, rapped and disrespected? Well i don’t think i would feel very good to be honest , and sadly that’s what indigenous people living in this day are feeling on this day, i think it would be so horrible knowing how much the people that live around you, love and celebrate such a day like this. People are celebrating this day not thinking about how the people that they “accept” and live in the same country as may feel or how much it might affect them.
So much indigenous people still have a state of mental health towards this day. The term social and emotional wellbeing is used by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to describe the social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural wellbeing of a person.
The fact that some of the indigenous people still have a state of mental towards this issue completely establishes my point even more.
Overall this day is a day that should not be celebrated in general because, this is the day of invasion which was a horrible and disgusting day for indigenous people, this shows complete disrespect towards indigenous people and people don’t know how much this day still affects indigenous people even in the generation we are in right now.
This day is a day that doesn’t deserve to be celebrated, and must be changed as soon a possible!
